STAND THE HEAT
Words & Music © John Morton 1997.

He’s only begun to date her—
She’s saving the best for later,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
She says better late than never—
He says he could wait for ever,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.

He loves her too much to measure—
So she stands him up for pleasure,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
She says that a friend just showed up—
He says it depends what sort of,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.

And isn’t this the same old story—
So clichéd and boring?
Same old story,
But isn’t ‘He and She’
A lot like ‘You and Me’?

We cut to her family dwelling—
She looks like the sky just fell in,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
She says she was due last weekend—
He says it’s her used-to-be friend,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.

Fast forward to five years later—
She says he’s begun to hate her,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
He makes out he’s had to borrow
To pay for her glad tomorrow,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.
He says he’s at work most evenings—
She tells him that she believes him,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
He runs like the child she mothers—
But into the arms of others,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.

And isn’t this, (etc…)

Dissolve to the present moment—
She tells him the show is over,
To see if the boy can stand the heat.
And he, as they roll the credits,
Pretends that she never said it,
To see if the girl can stand the heat.
